GOOD-BYE SHERIFF

—Over 1,000 persons including scores of law enforcement and emergency personnel attended the funeral of the late Milam County Sheriff David Greene Monday in the Bell County Expo Center, Belton. The service concluded with a 21-gun salute outside and a multi-vehicle motorcade.

Here is the jail log for July 24-30 from the Milam County Sheriff’s Department. Jail logs list all persons charged with offenses through the county jail docket. Charges may change during the process. Persons are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.

Groundwater summit ahead August 15th in Caldwell

The Milam and Burleson Counties Groundwater Summit is quickly approaching. The event has been set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, in the Caldwell Civic Center. “All are welcome to attend,” Doug Box, spokesman for the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation, said.

RHS grad named new principal at Yoe High

CAMERON—Brian Stork, a Rockdale native and 1991 graduate of Rockdale High School, has been named principal of C. H. Yoe High School in Cameron. Cameron ISD trustees, meeting in special session Thursday, unanimously named Stork to replace Joe Oliver who resigned last month citing health reasons.

BURN BAN BACK

Citing near-record temperatures (see separate story) and dry conditions, Milam County Commissioners on Monday imposed an outdoor burning ban. The Milam County Fire Chiefs Association recommended the action. The ban encompasses rural, unincorporated areas of the county.

Community ‘Summer Splash’ set for Friday, sponsored by city, PTO

A “Community Summer Splash,” sponsored by the City of Rockdale and the Rockdale ISD Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) has been scheduled for Friday at the city pool. Water slide, bounce house and concessions will start at 6 p.m. and the pool gates will open at 7 p.m.

Steel going up

There was lots of action again during the past week at the site of the new Rockdale Police Station, Green at Cameron (US 79). Structural steel went up and is continuing. Plumbing and drainage work has been completed and a slab poured.

Heat wave boils to 111 but not a record (yet)

Rockdale logged six consecutive days of highs at 105 or greater, topping out at 111 Monday, but the summer of 2018 hasn’t yet entered the record books. The 111 reading is two degrees shy of Rockdale’s all time high of 113 recorded Sept. 4, 2000.
