100 YEARS AGO… The biggest motion picture ever brought to Rockdale was scheduled to appear at the Maxie Theater. It was “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” a million-dollar master-picture by the Metro Pictures Corp. “Reporter ads get the grapes,” said Manager Frank Young of Scarbrough & Hicks Co.

Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This January 17, make the holiday more than just a day off and take time to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.

Milam CPS Board thanks citizens Dear editor, I want to thank the many wonderful citizens who participated in the Christmas sponsorship for our Milam County children in foster care and kinship care. Each year, we have more children who have been removed due to dangerous family situations.

Going to cooking university vicariously

My nephew, Kevin, recently started cooking school at Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Austin and I have to say I’m a little jealous. We have a family text thread and he’s been taking photos of what he’s learning to do and sending them to us.

100 YEARS AGO… Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Graves were the delightful hosts of Ye Merrie Wives Club. Ferns and exquisite pink sweet peas, rich shaded pansies and pink and white carnations graced the reception rooms where tables were arranged for the club game of 42.

It was unthinkable that Americans would storm the Capitol a year ago today with the intention of doing harm to members of Congress and overturning a lawful election. Yet it happened.

Love the smell of barbicide in the morning

We have been busy at The Rockdale Reporter. I told you last week that Gene Stork moved his business into our building which required us to do some moving and cleaning which was much needed anyway.

Making progress at the county annex

Renovation began on the new Milam County Annex on June 1, 2021. Substantial progress has been made and the project is about 80% complete. We hope to complete the 35,000 square foot renovation by April 1.

10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO… Ground was broken on Rockdale’s modern high school building. The building would occupy a position approximately in the center of the big campus which includes two blocks of ground and will face east.
