Moving Milam (county offices) makes sense

JUDGE’S COMMENTS Last December we began talking about moving the county offices from downtown Cameron to the former Cameron Little River Hospital property. The banks of the county control the 34,000-square-foot hospital building and the 10,000-square-foot former convent building.

100 YEARS AGO.... Rockdale called off its Fourth of July celebration because Thorndale was set to hold a three-day, county-wide observance to welcome home soldiers who were continuing to return from World War I. Rockdale leaders promised a similar three-day observance in 1920.

Market Day at the Yards June 22

COMMENTS FROM MICAH Milam County 4-H will host a 4-H food challenge on June 22 at the Market Day at the Yards. Kids cooking event starts at 10:30 a.m. but the Market Days starts at 9 a.m. and last till 1 p.m. and there will also be a mini Play Streets at the event.

EDITORIAL There were a couple of good results from the 86th Legislative Session, which ended on May 27. School districts in Texas will get an influx of funds from the state after years of decline. Property owners will see some relief from those rising tax bills.

Thanks to volunteers for Earth Day projects Dear editor On April 22, over 170 students, along with teachers, staff, and community members, participated in Earth Day activities. Previously, local Girl Scout Troops planted rose bushes and a crab apple tree at the Old City Cemetery.

EDITOR’S CORNER If you’re a regular reader of The Reporter’s page 3A you noticed a couple of important things were missing last week. There was no Milam County Jail Log and no sheriff’s report. There was a very good excuse for those omissions.

Looking back... 100 YEARS AGO.... Another Milam County community passed a “good roads” bond election. By a vote of 25-4, Yarrelton-area voters decided to upgrade a road which would provide a better link to Cameron.
