Dear editor, The American Legion members of Post 358 held their monthly meeting May 5. We had a couple of guests. One was Luke Olivares, a Rockdale High School student. Luke shared with us some of the things that are going on in his life. He is very active in school activities and community service.

Desire of the everlasting hills

On the mantle above our fireplace is an ivory- white rock weighing about four pounds. We found it up on the side of U.S. Highway 385 between Big Bend National Park and Marathon. A plaque nearby designates the mountain range there as the Ouachita Fold Belt.

Pray about everything

I’ve been teaching out of 1st Timothy on Sunday morning and last Sunday we bumped into the Apostle Paul’s words concerning prayer to this youngish pastor named Timothy who was stuck in Ephesus.

LOOKING BACK

100 YEARS AGO Remember the Divine injunction “cleanliness is next to Godliness.” In accordance with civic duty, it is ordered that Friday, May 15, be set aside as Clean Up Rockdale.

Slower economic growth and higher prices are the consequences of tariffs We’re beginning to see the fallout from the increase in tariffs across the spectrum.

Two important events coming soon

Don’t forget about the annual MARC Ride coming June 14. This ride is even more important to the MARC Center since they have lost their state funding and can use all the money they can get to continue their programs.

A dad’s eulogy; that smile endures

(I ran across Dad’s tribute to Kathy a while back and wanted to repeat it, and since Bill Whitmire didn’t have a column this week I thought I’d take this opportunity. KWC) We are blown away. By we, I mean the Cooke and Martin families.

The conclave begins May 7

Around the world, and especially within the shadowed corridors of the Vatican, human forces will try to shape the outcome of the papal election. That is to be expected. Conclaves, for all their ritual and spiritual mystique, are still human affairs. Cardinals read the mood of the church.

Thanks for all the help last week

Ask and ye shall receive. Boy did I get a lot of help when I asked for it last week. Both Lindsey Lillard and Tiffany Commerford Whitsel helped me and now I can share our RHS athletes’ successes on our social media with our readers and followers, and I’m very excited about that.
