Three Milam County athletes honored on All-Decade Team

Three former Milam County basketball players were named to the 2010s All-Decade Team by the Bryan Eagle sports staff in July. Wendell “Chuck” Mitchell Jr., Velma Mitchell and Aubrie King have all been selected to The Eagle’s 2010’s All-Decade Team. Mitchell Jr.

No season tickets for RHS

With the University Interscholastic League (UIL) requiring schools to limit their spectators to 50% plus social distancing for the 2020-2021 season, RHS will not have season tickets this year. However, those that purchased tickets will be allowed to keep their seats for the following year.

The pressures of being a top recruit

Like most kids who play sports, I once had dreams of playing in the NFL. When I scored touchdowns or intercepted passes in the pee-wee leagues, you couldn’t convince me that I wasn’t going to be the next Jerry Rice or Champ Bailey.

Venom place second in 12U tournament

Last week, 15 teams from all over Texas traveled to Franklin Communi ty Park to participate in the 12 and Under softball state tournament. Games were played Monday through Friday in a double elimination style tournament to crown a champion.

Rockdale host 15U tourney, Belton wins

Last week, Rockdale hosted the 15 and Under Softball League State Tournament at Rockdale Softball Field. Fourteen teams from around the state suited up to compete for a chance at being named champion. Tournament games were held Monday through Friday at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Becker named freshman of the year

UT Tyler’s outside hitter in volleyball, Kaylee Becker, has been named as the school’s Female Freshman Athlete of the Year for 2019-20 year. She also earned All-LSC Honorable Mention. Becker played in all 26 matches, while finishing 10th in the LSC in kills and 12th in scoring.

RHS parent meeting set for 7 p.m. Friday

RHS will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Friday to discuss the recent rulings of the UIL and protocols the school will put in place to ensure the student’s safety. The meeting will take place on Zoom. All high school parents will receive the link by email on the day of the meeting.

Sometimes we need to let our pride lead

When Cam Newton entered the NFL, he came in unlike any physical specimen the league had ever seen. At 6-foot-5 inches tall, 245 pounds, it appeared as if a defensive end had been placed into the position of quarterback. Newton’s combination of size, speed and power earned him the nickname Superman.

Fourteen softball teams descend on Milam County

Fourteen girls softball teams from all over Texas are in town this week to play in a double elimination style Softball 15 and Under League State Tournament at the Rockdale Softball Fields. As play began Monday, the playoff atmosphere was electric.

UIL changes rules again, RHS unaffected

Rockdale ISD athletic teams continue to proceed with their respective seasons with caution, as the University Interscholastic League pushed back the season for all 5A and 6A schools. All 5 and 6A Texas schools season will now start on Sept. 24. Practices scheduled for Aug.
