Rockdale’s economy: where we started to present

Rockdale grew from a sleepy farming and railroad stop to a manufacturing town in the 1950’s when Alcoa started. In the early 2000’s, both Alcoa and the Luminant power plants shut down and the town has not been the same since.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program seeking local student applicants

South Milam County high school students and home-schooled students in Thorndale, Milano and Rockdale interested in developing their leadership skills, and having a great time doing so, are invited to fill out an application for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program.

Bond vote ahead on RISD needs

All RISD campuses are at full capacity, expansion is needed to meet growth, and better security measures are being mandated by the state. As a result, RISD will hold a bond election in May to meet these needs.

Benefit for family who lost home Fire claimed the home of Kristi Martin, Clemente Abila and son Easton early Saturday morning. Martin is director of Tiger Town Learning Center. Tiger Town will hold a benefit for the family at their facility on Sunday, Jan. 29, selling chili and desserts from 10 a.m.

Rockdale MLK Day march held Sunday

Rockdale’s MLK Day celebration was held on Sunday. The march started at Wolf Park and ended at Sumuel Park where refreshments of juice, sodas and grilled hot dogs were waiting for the marchers.

Train museum meeting Thursday The Rockdale Train Depot Museum will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 19) at the Rockdale Depot. Meeting topics will be working on a budget and discussion of hiring a depot director.

Post Oak Savannah GCD re-elects officers

The board of directors of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District voted unanimously to re-elect the current slate of officers at their meeting on Jan. 10. Ward Roddam will continue as president, Jay Wilder as vice-president and Tommy Tietjen as secretary/ treasurer.

College fair coming to RHS Feb. 15

On Feb. 15 the Rockdale Tiger gym will be transformed into a college fair for the day. Several colleges, trade schools, and military representatives will be at Rockdale High School to meet with students from Milano, Rockdale and Thorndale High Schools.
