Seth Mulac, and the rest of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, didn’t have far to go at 8:50 a.m. last Wednesday for this fire in a detached garage at the Hector Garcia residence, 340 West Davilla. The RVFD Fire Station is on the corner of Bell and Wilcox just over a block away.

In a fast-moving, and somewhat confusing, week on the COVID-19 front, Milam County cumulative cases went up almost 50 percent and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott made mask-wearing mandatory in public under most circumstances.

Runoff election Tuesday

Milam County Precinct 1 voters have some unfinished business left over from March 3 Republican Primary, but they will finish taking care of it Tuesday. Incumbent Pct. 1 Commissioner Richard “Opey” Watkins and challenger Henry “Hub” Hubnik are the runoff candidates.

Annual crop tour ‘goes with the grain’

Not all this summer’s annual events in Milam County were called off due to COVID-19. The annual Milam Row Crops tour was staged Thursday even though there were changes due to the potentially deadly virus.

Are you all in?

We bought a new red Jeep Gladiator the other day. We traded in the black Mini Cooper convertible. It was our 3rd Mini and this is our 7th Jeep. We jump from one cult to the other if you know what I mean. And Minis are my favorite car ever. It was a hard decision.

Familiar activity

The Central Texas Food Bank continues to visit the KC Hall parking lot twice a month to distribute free surplus food with no eligibility requirements. Pam Warren of Rockdale Christian Services said Thursday’s visit served 666 individuals in 271 families.

Thursday rollover claims life near Milano

A one-vehicle rollover Thursday night on US 79 west of Milano claimed the life of a 45-year-old Cameron man. According to the Dept. of Public Safety, Frank Randolph Summers III died as a result of injuries sustained when his pickup rolled at 8:52 p.m.
