Former mayor dies

Darral Walker, whose election as mayor in 1974, ushered in a new era of Rockdale city government, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at his Rock-dale home. Memorial services were held Saturday at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Obituary, page 4D.

Jackpot bean, chili cookoff to benefi t ACS November 10

A jackpot beans and chili cookoff will be held Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Oak Club, 16149 N. FM 486, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Kim Jeter, spokesperson, said entry fee is $20 for chili and $10 for beans. Rules are: • Prepare on site. • No beans in chili.

PAWS adoption event scheduled Saturday

Rockdale Pet Adoption Welfare Services (PAWS) will hold a dog adoption event from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Saturday at their downtown location. PAWS is located at 215 North Main. Persons interested in adopting a dog are welcome to come by, according to Dan Ratliff, PAWS president.

Fire victim ID’d after house blaze in September, ‘17

Rockdale police have finally received a positive identification from the victim of a house fire on Sept. 27, 2017. Lt. Stephen Goodrich said the badly burned body recovered from the fire at 409 White was Jackline “Jackie” Hight, the home’s resident.

—The town is named for a rock. There’s going to be a rock incorporated into the landscaping at the new Rockdale Police Department, now under construction at the corner of Cameron (US 79) and Green.

Ex-Milam deputy facing charges

A former Milam County Deputy Sheriff is facing several charges in Williamson County, stemming from an argument. Jeffrey Teasdale, 42, a Taylor resident, was arrested by police in that city and charged with assault with bodily injury/family violence and cruelty to non-livestock animals.
