100 YEARS AGO… As per a previous announcement in T h e Reporter, the ex-servicemen of Rockdale and vicinity met and completed organization of the local post, operating under a temporary charter. The name “Carlyle” was selected for the post.

Aim for faithful life

The songs we sing on Sunday morning and the lives we live don’t really line up, do they? For example, “Jesus is all the world to me.” Maybe we should shy away from songs like that and sing, “How great Thou art” more often.

These mothers shed glory on motherhood

On May 26th, 1852, H.M.S. Birkenhead troop carrier was delivering soldiers to war in South Africa. At 2 a.m. she struck uncharted rocks off Cape of Good Hope. Six hundred forty-two souls were on board including seven women and thirteen children.

100 YEARS AGO… J.D. Hamilton, Rockdale citizen, businessman and former constable of this precinct, was instantly killed when he came in contact with a fallen electric light wire on East Cameron Avenue near the Spa Depot.

Chicken kabobs, a spicy salad

A couple of times lately I have included recipes that have two spices that aren’t readily available around here: za’atar and sumac. I even looked in Austin at Central Market and even they didn’t have either of them.

Dear editor, Rockdale friends and neighbors, Friday, April 22 was a great day in our community calendar. Approximately 110 of our citizens gathered for our Day of Community Service.
