Early voting at City Hall, other news

Early voting for the May 4 election for both city council and RISD school board will start on April 22, and this year the voting will take place at Rockdale City Hall in the council chamber. Early voting dates and times are April 22 through April 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Gertharine “Big Mama” Green had a special birthday last week when she turned 106 years old. On Saturday, a huge birthday party was held at her home on Third Street, also known as Gertharine Green Avenue.

Seafood and chicken salads

I’ve been hungry for salads since this spring weather started happening. Here's a seafood take on a classic Cobb salad. This recipe has a homemade vinaigrette, but you could use store bought Italian dressing. Brookshire Bros. has already-cooked shrimp that are fairly decent.

REUNION

The 88th annual Nelson Family Reunion will be held on May 5 at the Milano Community Center at 303 West Avenue E. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. The meal will be held at 12:30 p.m. and attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish and a dessert. Silent auction items are also requested.

Several Milano students heading to UIL regionals

Academic UIL competition was held at Blinn College April 5. Milano is sending several students to regionals in Corpus Christi. Congratulations to all participating students. ECLIPSE— I hope all of you were able to enjoy the eclipse on Monday and didn’t get stuck in traffic.

ORGANIZATIONS

Rockdale Rotary Club meets the first, third and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department from noon to 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. Rockdale Noon Lions Club also meets at RVFD on the first and third Wednesday of each month with lunch provided.

Changes coming to the DA’s office

As many of you likely know, I was elected in March as the Republican nominee for County and District Attorney. With there being no Democrat opponent, I will assume that position on Jan. 1, 2025.
