City amendments part of May 4th vote

City of Rockdale voters will be asked to add a sentence to one section of the city charter, and remove one to another section on May 4.

March 8 Gause ISD will have an early release at 12:30 p.m. March 11-15 is spring break. Hope the weather is nice and sunny so all the students and families can have a great time. On March 19, the Gause Bears will have a track meet here after school.

World Day of Prayer links cultures, traditions

The women of Slovenia have written this year’s service for the annual World Day of Prayer. First Presbyterian Church of Rockdale will host this year’s service on Friday at 11 a.m.

Police, RVFD honors due on Saturday

Numerous awards—including Officer of the Year and Firefighter of the Year—will be presented Saturday evening at the KC Hall at the 12th annual Police/Firefighter of the Year Banquet. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a catered meal at 6:30, awards at 7:30 and dance to follow.

This is a hall inside the new Rockdale Police Station and it’s going to look quite a bit different this week thanks to electrician Christian Hess and other workers.

Up attitudes in business downturn

In spite of Rockdale’s economic challenges, many entrepreneurs are turning obstacles into opportunity and going into business for themselves. Darren Veit is a case in point. Veit was a mechanic for Luminant in the mines, before he was laid off last year.

County records first 2019 highway death

Milam County recorded its first highway fatality of 2019 when a Killeen woman died Monday, a day and a half after a two-vehicle collision south of Milano. According to the Department of Public Safety, Vanessa Harrison died at 10:28 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan.

Mayor’s race heads ballot for May voters

Two key, last-day filings Friday—deadline for candidates in the May 4 elections—propelled the city race into the forefront. All three races, mayor and two council positions, are now contested. Add one contested school board race and Rockdale voters will now decide four contests this spring.
