Tiger Stadium to host District 19-3A track meet this week

Both Tiger and Lady Tiger track teams kicked off the District 20-3A meet on Wednesday after press time at Tiger Stadium with field events and running prelims taking place throughout the day. Running events began at 4:40 p.m., with the 100/110-meter hurdles.

Tiger fight never dies in 8-3 loss to Rogers

Going into Friday night’s game with Rogers at Tiger Field, the Blue-and-Gold expected a talented opponent, especially since the Eagles run-ruled Florence and Lexington in their first two district games and were coming off a 6-2 win over Academy, a team that runruled Rockdale last Friday.

PLAYOFFS: Season comes to an end

Rockdale’s hard fought journey into the post-season came to a stop late Saturday afternoon in Giddings with a 5-0 loss to Brookshire-Royal after the Falcons had a 14-minute surge where they scored four unanswered goals midway through the first half.

Kylberg named state champion

Thorndale’s Hayden Kylberg had quite the Saturday in Abilene, winning the state powerlifting championship in the 198-pound division with a 375 on bench, 520 on squat and 530 on dead lift for a total of 1,425. The THS junior beat runner-up Daniel Sambrano of La Pryor by 45 pounds.

The Pursuit of Happyness

For the third time this season, RHS sophomore Emma Whitsel won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, taking the former with a time of 16.04, beating out competitors from Giddings and Brenham. In the 300, she beat out Daisha Denson from Caldwell with a 48.87.

Tigers’ ‘biggest fan’ passes away

On Saturday, lifetime Rockdale resident and Tiger super fan Joe Wayne Cleveland died at his home. Cleveland was the man behind the scenes filming almost every Tiger football game since 1969 and worked for 11 different Rockdale head football coaches in his 52 seasons atop the Tiger Stadium bleachers.

Comeback kids: Eagles beat Granger 10-9

Milano baseball ended the past week with a twogame winning streak after trailing 9-6 to Granger going into the final inning Friday. MHS won 10-9 after rallying with runners on base, leading to a game-winning single by Oscar Hernandez.

Lady Dogs finish first half at 7-0

Thorndale came out on top at home against Granger 13-4 after Lady Dog bats got hot early with hits from Emilee Baker, Kelsey Kovar, Reagyn Trahan, Emily Reeves and Natalie Garcia, who went four-for-four in Friday’s game.
