Tiger Stadium to host District 19-3A track meet this week

Both Tiger and Lady Tiger track teams kicked off the District 20-3A meet on Wednesday after press time at Tiger Stadium with field events and running prelims taking place throughout the day. Running events began at 4:40 p.m., with the 100/110-meter hurdles.

Thorndale’s Hayden Kylberg had quite the Saturday in Abilene, winning the state powerlifting championship in the 198-pound division with a 375 on bench, 520 on squat and 530 on dead lift for a total of 1,425. The THS junior beat runner-up Daniel Sambrano of La Pryor by 45 pounds.

For the third time this season, RHS sophomore Emma Whitsel won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, taking the former with a time of 16.04, beating out competitors from Giddings and Brenham. In the 300, she beat out Daisha Denson from Caldwell with a 48.87.

On Saturday, lifetime Rockdale resident and Tiger super fan Joe Wayne Cleveland died at his home. Cleveland was the man behind the scenes filming almost every Tiger football game since 1969 and worked for 11 different Rockdale head football coaches in his 52 seasons atop the Tiger Stadium bleachers.
