A brother-and-sister duo who enjoyed spectacular athletic success in high school and college, the dominant Tiger baseball standout of the early 1980s and a radio station that’s been backing RHS teams for almost 30 years are the newest inductees in the Rockdale Athletic Hall of Honor.

Tiger XC has week off, MHS, THS run in Temple

Milano and Thorndale high school cross country teams held their own at the Pro-Fit Cross Country Invitational in Temple, Saturday, Sept. 1. The Eagles and Lady Eagles placed individually, while the Thorndale Bulldogs varsity placed fifteenth, and the Lady Bulldogs varsity placed ninth as a team.

Lions golf scramble signup underway

Sign-up for the 28th annual Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament is underway at the country club. The Rockdale Noon Lions Club will hold the tournament at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6. Proceeds will go to the Lions’ scholarship fund.

Eagles fall 27-0 in opening game

The Milano Eagles rushing game showed promise in their 27-0 season opening loss on the road to the Grapeland Sandies Friday night. The Eagles had 58 rushing yards to Grapeland’s 83 on the ground. Milano’s Kathen Funburg completed five of 14 passes for 48 yards. He also tallied 36 rushing yards.

Thorndale preps for perennial powerhouse Bremond Tigers

The Thorndale High School football team made the most of their season opener bye week by choosing their starters and preparing for their matchup against Bremond Tigers scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Sept. 7.

Thorndale JV wins first game of season

The Thorndale JV football team defeated Santo Wildcats (6-2A-II) with their running game on Thursday at Meridian by a final score of 44-0. “It was an overall team effort on both sides of the ball with everyone making big contributions,” said Coach Kelly Kuhl.

A shot in the dark

Agame warden received a call on Aug. 6 about a man in Titus County who had accidentally shot himself while out on his deer lease preparing for the upcoming hunting season. The man was driving his side-by-side UTV back to the house around 9 p.m. the previous night when the accident occurred.

Tigers take on the herd

The defending-state champion Rockdale Tigers will open their 2018 season on Friday at Giddings against a team that’s being led by a new head coach.
