Lady Tigers adjusting to competition

VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP The Lady Tigers went 8-2 after their first batch of non-district volleyball matches in tournament and cross county rival play this past weekend. Rockdale High School finished first with the most wins in the silver bracket of the Florence Volleyball Tournament, Aug. 9-11.

Local track stars compete in state meet, Junior Olympics

Rockdale track stars made a good showing in their first year at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation State Track Meet in College Station, and the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa.

Big city living with small town prices

About a month ago, I was at Whole Foods on South Lamar in Austin eating two slices of pizza that were in the same price range as a large one-topping from a pizza place in Rockdale, when I received a message from Ken Cooke asking that I call him as soon as I was able to.

Area netters scrimmaging, get ready for tourney play

The Rockdale Lady Tigers held their first scrimmage at home early Saturday, sharing the gym with fellow Milam county schools Milano and Thorndale, and Rogers in Bell County. Rockdale had 34 girls show up to the first day of practices.

Grinding it out

TERRIBLE TWOS: Two-a-days begin in Milam County Rockdale High School football players got back to the grind this week, opening two-a-day workouts on Monday with 80 players, according to Coach Jeff Miller. Last year, the Tigers had 107 players on the first day.

First Purple-Gold Scholarships awarded

Three Rockdale High School graduates were recently awarded the inaugural Purple and White Scholarships. Frances King, Sharice Boyd, and Brajon Ayala were awarded $300 each to go towards their college education.

Brown Santa Golf tourney raises money for kids toys

Over 120 people came out to support the Milam County Brown Santa Golf Tournament on July 28 at the Cameron Country Club. The tournament, founded by the late David Greene of the Milam County Sheriff’s Office in 2010, exceeded the previous years total for the eighth year in row.

Bulldogs make all-state

Two Thorndale High School baseball players were named to the Texas Sportswriter Association All-State Second Team in August.

Public county budget hearings scheduled

The appraisal district submitted the certified Milam County tax roll and it clearly pointed out what I think we all know by now is happening. We lost a significant portion of our tax base with the closing of Luminant.
