Summer league showdown

Rockdale’s Mason Willard goes baseline against Milano’s Layne Telg in a summer league game at the Tiger Gymnasium Thursday evening. Milano erased a 14-point Rockdale lead, but Rockdale bounced back with some late shots to win the game 52-50.

Beran, Davis earn All-State picks

Last week, the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association announced that Thorndale baseball players Bryson Beran and Logan Davis were all-state selections. Beran, who concluded the year with 38 hits, 23 runs batted in and a batting average of .404, was pegged for the top team as a first baseman.

Taylor grad headed to Olympics

With a third place finish and a time of 9.86 in the 100-meter dash at Saturday’s Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, Taylor High School graduate Fred Kerley punched his ticket to the Tokyo Olympics later this summer.

Baker, Kovar headed to all-star game

Last Wednesday, Thorndale softball players Emilee Baker and Kelsey Kovar were invited to play in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s All-Star game at Arlington’s Workman Softball Complex on Tuesday, July 13.

Rockdale’s summer league basketball team fell to Class 6A Weiss (Pflugerville) 40-22 on Monday night at Stony Point High School in Round Rock. The Blue-and-Gold have three more games during the month of June. OTHER—Tiger baseball players took on district foe Academy Tuesday evening after press time.

RHS athletes earn 19-3A honors

With the conclusion of the 2021 season, eight Rockdale baseball players earned District 19-3A awards. Freshman Cruz San Migel (catcher/utility player) and Mario Casarez (pitcher) were named to the first team as well as junior Tra’on Crawford (infield).

Rockdale’s Mitchell rides to perfection

Over the weekend at Fort Worth’s Cowtown Coliseum, Rockdale native Ezekiel Mitchell took home the top prize at the PBR Touring Pro Division’s Stockyard Showcase. Clinching his first event victory since 2019, Mitchell scored an 86.75 in the first round and 87.

Thorndale falls short of state tourney

Thorndale athletes came close to qualifying for the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament Saturday when the Bulldogs started off hot with a 28-14 win over Johnson City and beat Snook 26-6.
