Hasselbach named athlete of the year

Rockdale alum Annie Hasselbach was named one of two recipients from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor for the American Southwest Conference Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor.

Churches, city plan citywide swim evening

Local churches in partnership with the city of Rockdale are sponsoring an evening of fun June 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the pool in Veterans Park.  “This is a great way for families to start the summer,” said Raymon Puente, spokesman for the event that is open to all who wish to come.

Murphy’s Law was in full effect late Thursday afternoon, as the bus taking the Rockdale 7-on-7 group to the Needville State Qualifier Tournament got a flat tire between Somerville and College Station.

Kovar wins District 27-2A MVP

With the release of district picks last week, a total of 28 Thorndale High School athletes earned honors and junior Kelsey Kovar was named District 27-2A’s most valuable player. Kovar ended her 2021 campaign with a batting average of .698 and eight home runs.

Milano matador signs at Hill College

On the eve of his high school graduation, bullfighter Ryland Kirk signed a letter of intent in Milano High School’s library in front of friends and family to continue his career at Hillsboro’s Hill College. “It’s kind of bittersweet you know,” Kirk said.

Edmonson headed for Hearne

While exploring new opportunities, RHS head track coach Lewis Edmonson was offered the same position at Class 5A Manor High School and was one of two final candidates for the same job at Cy-Springs High, a Class 6A school in the Houston suburbs.

THS leatherheads play at Lexington

Thorndale 7-on-7 battled in a tough pool this weekend at the state qualifier in Chilton, with the Bulldog athletes falling 19-14 and 21-20 to Class 3A programs Riesel and New Waverly. They also faced Buffalo, who beat them 28-14.

Clark headed to Philly

Last week, it was reported by msn. com that Rockdale native Le’Raven Clark would be leaving the Indianapolis Colts after four seasons to join the Philadelphia Eagles. The RHS Class of 2011 grad signed a one-year deal with the Eagles, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

7-on-7 action rescheduled for Thursday

Due to inclement weather all around the state, Rockdale’s seven-on-seven squad wasn’t able to play in Needville’s State Qualifier Tournament this past Saturday. Games have been moved to Thursday w it h pool play beginning at 4 p.m., and the state qualifying round kicking off f at 6:15.
