Segovia, Perry qualify for state meet

DUBLIN—Over the weekend, Rockdale High School students Shelly Segovia and Elizabeth Perry qualified for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s state championship meet in Frisco.

Four win gold at Navasota tennis tourney

Rockdale High School tennis players traveled with coach Melanie Seltzer to her former school Navasota last Wednesday, where Yolianna Castillo, Julie Bartsch, Brody Willard and Mason Lillard each left with gold medals.

Bulldogs, Eagles both win big in area championships

On Friday night, the Thorndale Bulldog and the Milano Eagle basketball teams were both crowned as area champions with wins propelling them to regional quarterfinal games on Tuesday after press time.

Bigger schools competing in Rockdale

In his high school debut, Tiger freshman De’Andre Stephens was named as the Ganado Relays “Top Overall Boys Athlete” after racking up 33 of his team’s 120 points with silver medals in the high jump, triple jump, 200-meter dash, mile relay and a gold in the sprint relay.

Miles earns first team honors

Nine Lady Tiger hoopsters win district awards Last week, RHS junior Ciara Miles was picked by 19-3A girls basketball coaches to be a first team all-district selection while senior teammates Saige Robertson and Mijah Crawford were voted on to the second team.

RHS opens tourney play

Lady Tiger sof tbal l played in their first official games of the 2023 season this past week, with a 19-0 shut out over Mumford on Wednesday and a 20-3 loss to Granger on Friday. They play next in the Taylor tournament this weekend. RHS opens district play at home against rival Cameron on Monday.

SPORT BRIEFS

On Monday night in Fayetteville, the Milano Eagle basketball team opened the playoffs with a 66-55 victory over Ganado, the fourth-place team from District 28-2A. The Eagles move on to area and face the winner of Somerville and West Hardin, who played in Willis on Tuesday after press time.

THS falls flat in bi-district

GIDDINGS—Lady Dog basketball’s fate came down to their post-season opener’s final seconds, with a catch-and-release from senior Abby Dickerson from well behind the three-point line as her team trailed 51-49 to Flatonia. It didn’t go in, knocking Thorndale out of the playoffs.
