Musto, Navarro return to regionals

Rockdale senior powerlifters Jesenia Navarro and Mackenzie Musto have qualified for the Region III meet in Dublin on March 5. Navarro won the 114-pound division squatting 255 pounds, bench pressing 110 and hitting a dead lift of 270 for a total of 635 pounds.

It all came down to the final minutes in Rockdale’s 57-50 loss to Cameron, where the Lady Yoe pulled away towards the end. “It was back and forth, peaks and valleys. Our goal was to come out a lot stronger than we did the first game we had with Camer on,” said Lady Tiger head coach Meredith Caffey.

Eagles beat Granger on the road 66-35

On Friday night, the Milano Eagle basketball team picked up their second straight win, taking down Granger 66-35 at the Lion Gymnasium. Jayce Todd led MHS with 21 points and Bryson Richards scored 14. Three days earlier, the Eagles picked up their first district win, beating Thrall 67-60 at home.

As the snow began to melt last week, Rockdale High School track and field teams made their way out to the football field for their first practices of the 2021 season. Workouts weren’t long, due to cold weather that lingered between the mid-40’s and high 50’s.

Bee sting: Undefeated Academy teams cause trouble in Rockdale

A young Tiger squad was challenged at home Friday, when they went up against top-ranked Academy, where the Bees took the game 75-41. Chris Perez led RHS with 14, Colton Bradshaw had 10 and Raymond McBride had five. This contest marks the end of the first half of their district slate.

It seemed early in Friday’s game at the RHS Gym that the Rockdale girls’ basketball team was holding their own with Academy, a team undefeated in district play, as they stayed within reach and trailed 11-5 at the close of the opening quarter.

First-year coach Shirley Lozano and the Lady Tigers played in their first tourney over the season when they travelled to Cameron. The Rockdale squad opened this past Thursday with an 8-0 loss to Navasota. On Friday, RHS fell 6-0 to Academy.
