Trustees to name new head coach this Thursday

Rockdale ISD trustees will meet—sort of—at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to name a new head football coach/athletic director. The “sort of” is because it’s a meeting by phone due to the COVID-19 situation.

Houston Livestock Show shutdown impacts 4-H’ers

Thirty children from Milam County’s 4-H program made the two-hour trip for the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo the second week of March, but were disappointed when at 1:30 p.m. officials announced the shutdown of the rodeo.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think a virus would affect the world in such a manner, and it hurts my heart to see it unfold. Last week saw the sports world shaken to its core by the disease known as COVID-19.

UIL cancels all sporting events through March 29

As part of the effort to contain the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the University Interscholastic League has suspended all sporting events starting March 16 until March 29. Practices may be held with approval from the school district.

Lady Tigers improve to 1-1 in District 19-3A play

The Lady Tigers crushed the McGregor Lady Bulldogs 13-6 on Wednesday, March 11 in their last game before the COVID-19 postponement. Coach Meghann Infantino said she has no information about the rest of district play but will continue to monitor the situation.

Nine semifinalists in head coach hunt

Rockdale ISD trustees continue to narrow their search to replace the winningest head football coach in Rockdale history. Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo said the search to find a replacement for Jeff Miller has winnowed 19 candidates to 9 and will be cut to three for in-person interviews.

EASY WINS

Devon Whitsel beats the competition in Cameron on Friday, March 6. He made quick work of two opponents from Lexington and Caldwell early Friday morning winning both matches 8-0. In the finals, he beat Bradon Brasher of Cameron 6-2, 6-1. All UIL tennis matches have been postponed until March 26.

Tigers get in three games before tournament called

The final day of the Rockdale/Thorndale Baseball Tournament was canceled last weekend but not before the Tigers got three games in tournament play.

Cagers named to all-district

Two RHS players were given first and second 19-3A All-District basketball honors. Junior power forward Anthony Dansby was named First Team All-District. He averaged 6.2 points for the season and was a monster on defense for the Tigers.

Bulldogs go 1-3 in home tournament

Thorndale boys’ baseball team managed to play four games last week before the cancellation of their tournament. Ty Kovar was the offensive standout throughout the tournament. He racked up three runs, hits and RBIs throughout the tournament.
